
Spiders are among the most misunderstood animals people share a home with. Some of what everyone "knows" about them is wrong, and a few of the corrections have practical consequences for anyone trying to get spider activity under control.
1. Most Spiders In Your Home Never Came From Outside
A significant share of the spiders found indoors are house spiders — species that have adapted to live inside structures and complete their entire life cycle there. They did not wander in from the yard. They hatched in the wall void, the basement, or the garage.
This is why sealing a house does not eliminate an established indoor population on its own.
2. Webs Are A Small Fraction Of The Story
Only about half of spider species build webs to catch prey at all. Wolf spiders, jumping spiders, and many others hunt actively on foot.
A home with very few visible webs can still have substantial spider activity. Web count is a poor measure of population.
3. They Are Almost Always Eating Something You Have Not Noticed
Spiders are obligate predators. They do not eat crumbs, wood, or fabric. Every spider in a structure is there because it is finding insects.
Persistent spider activity is one of the most reliable indicators of an unnoticed insect population — often gnats, small flies, silverfish, or springtails living in a damp area.
4. Bites Are Far Rarer Than People Assume
Most skin lesions blamed on spiders are not spider bites. Dermatologists and entomologists have documented this repeatedly. Bacterial infections, other arthropod bites, and various skin conditions are misattributed constantly.
Spiders bite defensively, when pressed against skin. They do not bite sleeping people for no reason.
5. Nevada Has Only Two Species Of Real Medical Concern
The black widow is present throughout Nevada and is the one to know. Its venom is neurotoxic and a bite warrants medical evaluation, though fatalities are extremely rare with modern care.
The brown recluse is not established in northern Nevada, despite how often it is blamed. Reports usually turn out to be other, harmless species.
6. A Single Egg Sac Can Hold Hundreds
Depending on species, one egg sac may contain anywhere from a few dozen to several hundred eggs. A female may produce multiple sacs over her life.
This is the mechanism behind an infestation that seems to appear overnight. It did not — a sac hatched.
7. They Can Survive Remarkable Stretches Without Food
Many spiders can go weeks or months between meals by dropping their metabolic rate. Some can survive without water for surprisingly long periods as well.
Practically, this means starving out a population by cleaning alone is not realistic on any useful timeline.
8. Silk Is Produced In Several Different Types
A single spider may produce multiple kinds of silk from different glands — sticky capture silk, structural draglines, egg sac silk, and wrapping silk. Some are among the strongest known biological materials by weight.
9. Cold Does Not Kill Them Off
Many species tolerate freezing conditions through antifreeze compounds in their tissue. Others simply move into heated structures and remain active all winter.
The expectation that winter resets a spider problem is one of the more common misconceptions in cold-climate homes.
10. Most Home Treatments Miss Where They Actually Live
Spiders concentrate in voids, corners, and undisturbed spaces — rim joists, insulation gaps, storage areas, and the backs of closets. Surface sprays applied to open floors and baseboards rarely reach those places.
This is why the results from consumer products are so often temporary.
What This Means For Your Home
Taken together, these facts point the same direction. Spider activity is a symptom. The spiders you see are the visible edge of a population supported by prey insects you have not found, sheltering in spaces you do not routinely inspect.
Meaningful spider control works on all three at once: the spiders, the insects sustaining them, and the conditions — moisture, clutter, gaps — that make the structure suitable.
