Ants are the most common call we take in Sparks, and the reason they're persistent has nothing to do with how clean a kitchen is. In a high desert ants move on water first and food second. That makes the northern subdivisions unusually predictable: Wingfield Springs and Kiley Ranch run golf-course-grade irrigation across turf and greenbelt all summer, and the trails appear along foundations within a week or two of the system coming on.
The older half of the city works differently. Around Victorian Square the foundations were never sealed to a modern standard, so ants aren't just trailing in from the landscaping, they're exploiting the building itself. And along the Glendale corridor the Truckee keeps the ground damp year-round in a valley where nothing else is, which stretches the season at both ends.
The method doesn't change: identify the species, place a bait the workers carry back and feed to the colony, treat the entry point and the exterior harborage, and break the trail at the foundation. Then leave it alone long enough to work, which is the part that goes wrong most often when people treat it themselves.

Because the ants you can see are foragers, a small fraction of the colony, and the nest is somewhere you can't reach. Contact spray kills the visible ones and leaves the queen and brood untouched, and with several species it also causes the colony to split and open new trails, which is why the problem often returns bigger. Bait works the other way around: the foragers carry it home and feed it to the colony, so it takes a few days longer and actually ends it.
In the newer northern subdivisions, mostly yes, because that's where the colonies actually are. Wingfield Springs and Kiley Ranch homes are sealed well enough that the trail is the whole problem, and breaking it at the beds and the slab edge solves it. Around Victorian Square it's only half the answer, because the foundation itself gives them a route that landscaping treatment never touches.
Quite possibly, and it's worth an inspection rather than a spray. Carpenter ants don't eat wood, they excavate damp or decaying wood to nest in, so large ants indoors during the cold months usually means a nest already inside the structure rather than something that wandered in. In Sparks we find them most in the older stock near Victorian Square and along the Truckee, and the cause is nearly always a roof leak, old decking, or a woodpile against the house.
Usually three to seven days with baiting, and the trail often looks busier on day one or two before it drops away. That's the treatment working, with more foragers recruiting to the bait and carrying it back. The most common way a successful ant treatment gets lost is somebody spraying that busy trail on day two, which kills the delivery system.
Ant work usually sits inside a recurring plan rather than a one-off visit, because a colony treated once in May is a different colony by August if nothing is holding the perimeter in between.
