
Homeowners usually ask this question after the third or fourth sighting in a week. The honest answer has two halves: spiders reproduce more slowly than most household pests, and yet a spider population can still seem to explode overnight. Both things are true, and understanding why explains a lot about how spider problems develop indoors.
The Short Answer
Spiders do not multiply fast in the way cockroaches or fruit flies do. A German cockroach can produce a new generation in about two months, continuously. Most spiders produce eggs seasonally, and many common house spiders live around a year.
What spiders do instead is concentrate reproduction. Rather than a steady trickle of offspring, a female deposits an egg sac containing dozens to hundreds of eggs at once. When that sac hatches, the local population jumps in a single step.
That is the mechanism behind the experience homeowners describe as "suddenly there are spiders everywhere." Nothing gradual happened. A sac hatched.
What Egg Sacs Look Like And Where They Are
Egg sacs vary by species, but most share a general appearance: a rounded or teardrop-shaped silk parcel, off-white to tan, usually between a quarter inch and an inch across. Some are suspended in webbing, others are attached flat to a surface or carried by the female.
They are almost always placed somewhere protected and undisturbed:
- Corners of window frames and door frames
- Behind and beneath stored boxes
- Rim joists and basement ceiling seams
- Inside garages, sheds, and crawl spaces
- Under outdoor furniture and in eaves
Finding sacs is more diagnostically useful than finding spiders. A sac means reproduction is happening inside the structure, not that a spider wandered in from outside.
Why Indoor Conditions Accelerate Everything
Outdoors, spider reproduction is constrained by weather, predators, and food scarcity. Winter in northern Nevada reduces populations sharply.
Indoors, none of that applies. A heated Reno home holds a stable temperature year round, offers protection from predators and weather, and — critically — often supports a steady insect food supply. Under those conditions, species that would produce one generation outdoors can remain active and reproductive far longer.
This is why cold weather does not solve indoor spider problems. It often makes them worse, by removing outdoor competition and driving additional spiders inside.
Food Supply Is The Real Limiter
Population growth for any predator is bounded by prey availability. Spiders are no exception.
An indoor spider population that keeps growing has a food source keeping pace with it. In most Reno-area homes, that means a persistent insect population somewhere — commonly:
- Gnats and small flies around drains or overwatered plants
- Silverfish in humid storage areas
- Springtails near moisture intrusion
- Moths and beetles in stored goods
- Insects drawn to exterior lighting and entering at night
Cut the prey supply and spider numbers fall on their own. Leave it in place and killing individual spiders accomplishes very little, because the conditions supporting the population are unchanged.
Signs You Have Moved Past A Few Stray Spiders
A handful of sightings during a seasonal shift is normal. The following suggest an established, reproducing indoor population:
- Multiple egg sacs found in different rooms or areas
- Very small spiders — recent hatchlings — rather than only adults
- Webs rebuilt within a day or two of being cleared
- Activity that continues through winter rather than tapering
- Sightings spreading from a garage or basement into living space
What Actually Reduces The Population
Because reproduction is concentrated in sacs and sustained by prey, effective control targets both.
Removing accessible egg sacs prevents the next population jump. Treating harborage — the voids and corners where spiders actually live, rather than open floors — reaches the adults. Addressing moisture and the insect population removes what sustains the whole system. Sealing exterior gaps reduces resupply from outside.
Consumer sprays applied to baseboards miss most of this. They contact the occasional spider crossing a treated surface while leaving sacs, harborage, and prey untouched.
