
Extreme heat is often assumed to suppress insect activity. In northern Nevada it does the opposite. It concentrates activity, and it concentrates it toward whatever is cool and damp, which in a dry landscape is usually the inside of your house.
What Heat Actually Does
Insects are ectothermic, so their metabolism and development speed up as temperatures rise. Life cycles shorten and populations grow faster.
At the same time, high temperatures create desiccation risk. Small-bodied insects lose water rapidly, which forces a behavioral shift: they seek cooler, more humid microclimates during the hottest part of the day and become more active at dawn and dusk.
In a region where ambient humidity runs low and open ground dries within hours, the cool humid refuges are limited. Irrigated landscaping. Shaded foundation beds. And the conditioned interior of buildings.
That is the whole mechanism. Heat does not push insects away, it pushes them toward you.
Water Is The Controlling Factor
More than food, more than shelter, water determines summer insect distribution here.
The sources that matter around a typical Reno or Sparks home:
- Irrigation spray hitting foundations and walls
- Leaking hose bibs, valves, and drip emitters
- Overwatered beds against the structure
- Condensation lines from HVAC equipment
- Pool and spa splash-out
- Pet water bowls left outside
- Standing water in saucers, buckets, and low spots
Each of these is a destination. Insects that find one will concentrate there, and anything adjacent to that point becomes the next place they go.
The highest-value action available in summer is adjusting irrigation so nothing wets the structure and repairing leaks promptly. It costs almost nothing and it changes the geometry of the problem.
Which Insects Respond Most
Ants. The clearest example. Colonies seeking water during heat are the reason kitchen and bathroom trails spike in July and August.
Earwigs. Strongly moisture dependent. They congregate in mulch and dense groundcover and move indoors when the outside dries.
Springtails. Appear in large numbers around damp areas and are a direct moisture indicator.
Silverfish. Need humidity, so they concentrate in bathrooms, under sinks, and in damp storage.
Crickets. Seek cooler shelter during the day, which means garages, crawl spaces, and basements.
Spiders. Follow all of the above.
Cockroaches. Exterior species around irrigation boxes and drains become more active and more likely to move indoors.
Cooling Systems As Entry Points
Worth its own section, because it is specific to hot climates and routinely missed.
Air conditioning creates a temperature and humidity differential that insects detect and move toward. The equipment itself creates openings:
- Refrigerant line penetrations, often unsealed at the wall
- Condensate drain lines, which provide both moisture and a direct path
- Window air conditioner units, where the gaps around the unit are rarely sealed properly
- Evaporative coolers, which are common in this region and produce substantial moisture
- Ductwork gaps in attics and crawl spaces
Evaporative coolers deserve particular attention. They add humidity by design, and the pads, reservoirs, and supply lines create a consistently damp environment on the roof or wall of the structure.
Practical Protection
Manage water first.
- Adjust every sprinkler head away from the foundation
- Repair leaking emitters, valves, and hose bibs
- Water in early morning so surfaces dry during the day
- Reduce watering frequency near the structure
- Route condensate lines away from the foundation
- Eliminate standing water
Seal the entry points.
- Fit and maintain door sweeps, including the garage
- Seal around refrigerant lines, condensate drains, and all utility penetrations
- Repair window screens
- Seal gaps around window air conditioning units
- Close foundation cracks and screen weep holes
Reduce exterior harborage.
- Keep a clear band against the foundation
- Reduce mulch depth near walls, since deep mulch holds moisture
- Trim vegetation so nothing touches the structure
- Clear debris, stored material, and rock piles from the perimeter
Adjust lighting.
- Warm white bulbs at 2700K or lower, or amber
- Motion sensors instead of dusk-to-dawn operation
- Move fixtures away from doors where possible
Manage interior humidity.
- Run bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans
- Address any plumbing leaks promptly
- Use a dehumidifier in consistently damp basements or crawl spaces
Timing Your Work
Do the sealing and irrigation adjustments in late spring, before peak heat. Once daytime temperatures are consistently high, insects are already concentrated at whatever water sources exist, and you are managing an established pattern rather than preventing one.
