
A rodent problem rarely announces itself with visible damage. It announces itself with a sound in the ceiling, and by the time anyone investigates, several months of work has already been done in places nobody looks.
Here are the five categories that actually cost money, roughly in order of severity.
1. Electrical Wiring And Fire Risk
The most serious, and the one that gets discovered last.
Rodent incisors grow continuously, so rodents gnaw constantly to wear them down. Electrical cable is close to ideal for that purpose, and it runs in long uninterrupted lines through exactly the voids rodents prefer to travel.
Once the insulating jacket is stripped, three failure modes become possible. Exposed conductors can arc, producing sparks well above the ignition point of surrounding material. A damaged circuit can short. Or, most insidiously, a partially severed conductor can run hot under normal load without ever drawing enough current to trip a breaker.
All of it happens surrounded by insulation, dry framing, dust, and shredded nesting material.
Damage concentrates in attics where wiring crosses joists, inside wall voids, behind appliances, and under vehicle hoods, which is its own expensive problem.
Warning signs: flickering lights on one circuit, breakers tripping without cause, warm outlets or switch plates, any burning smell you cannot trace.
2. Insulation Destruction
Rodents tear insulation apart for nesting material and compress what remains by tunneling through it.
The efficiency loss is real and ongoing. Compressed and displaced insulation loses much of its R-value, which shows up as higher heating and cooling costs in a climate with cold winters and hot summers.
Worse, the insulation gets contaminated with urine and droppings. Contaminated insulation generally cannot be cleaned; it has to be removed and replaced. Attic insulation replacement across an average home runs into the thousands.
This is one of the more common reasons a rodent problem discovered late costs several times what it would have cost early.
3. Structural And Material Damage
Rodents gnaw framing lumber, subflooring, drywall, ductwork, and the sheathing on pipes. Rats in particular do meaningful structural work over time.
Specific problems:
- Gnawed holes in ductwork, which loses conditioned air and spreads contamination through the HVAC system
- Damaged plumbing lines and, occasionally, water damage from chewed PEX
- Enlarged entry openings, since rodents widen gaps to fit, which then admits larger pests
- Compromised vapor barriers in crawl spaces
- Damaged fascia, soffit, and roof sheathing at entry points
Burrowing species can also undermine slabs, walkways, and landscaping, and their abandoned burrows are later occupied by ground-nesting yellowjackets.
4. Contamination Of Food And Stored Goods
A single mouse produces dozens of droppings per day and urinates more or less continuously as it travels, marking routes with scent.
Anything stored along those routes is affected: pantry goods, pet food, birdseed, stored clothing and linens, seasonal decorations, documents, and boxed belongings in garages and attics.
Rodents also chew into packaging to access contents, so the loss is usually broader than the visible contamination suggests. In commercial settings this extends to inventory loss and regulatory exposure.
5. Health Consequences
The category people underweight.
Rodents are associated with several transmissible diseases. In northern Nevada, deer mice are the relevant concern for hantavirus, which is contracted by inhaling particles from disturbed droppings, urine, or nesting material. Salmonella, leptospirosis, and rat-bite fever are also documented.
Beyond direct pathogens, rodent allergens are a recognized asthma trigger, particularly in children, and the effect persists as long as contaminated material remains in the structure.
This is why cleanup method matters. Dry sweeping or vacuuming droppings aerosolizes particles and is exactly the wrong approach. Material should be ventilated, wetted with disinfectant, removed with protection, and disposed of sealed.
Rodents additionally carry secondary pests inside. Fleas, mites, and ticks arrive with them and remain after they are gone.
Why Damage Compounds
Each of these accelerates. A small population becomes a large one. A small gap gets widened. Contamination spreads along established routes. Scent marking attracts more rodents to the same paths.
The cost curve is steep, which is why the practical advice is unglamorous: act on the first sign rather than waiting to see whether it develops.
First signs worth acting on: droppings anywhere, scratching or scurrying in walls and ceilings, a musky ammonia-like odor, gnaw marks on packaging or framing, shredded nesting material, or unexplained pet interest in a wall or appliance.
