
Exterior lighting is one of the most direct pest attractants around a home, and one of the easiest to change. A porch light running all night is actively recruiting insects to your entry points, and the insects then recruit the things that eat them.
Which Insects Come To Light
Not all of them do. The ones that do are consistent.
Moths. The classic example. Most night-flying moth species orient to light strongly.
Beetles. June beetles, ground beetles, darkling beetles, and click beetles all arrive at lights. These are also the ones most likely to end up indoors, since they land and then wander in at ground level.
Midges, gnats, and small flies. Arrive in the largest numbers, particularly near any water source.
Mayflies and caddisflies. Seasonal but heavy when they emerge, especially near the Truckee River corridor and irrigation.
Leafhoppers and planthoppers. Small, abundant, and often mistaken for gnats.
Lacewings. Beneficial predators, but they come to lights and get inside.
Crane flies. Large and alarming, entirely harmless, and drawn to light reliably.
Some wasps and ants. Reproductive winged forms in particular, during mating flights.
Notably not attracted: cockroaches, which avoid light, and most spiders, which come for a different reason.
Why It Happens
The mechanism is not fully settled, but the leading explanation is that night-flying insects navigate by keeping a distant light source, historically the moon, at a constant angle. A nearby artificial light breaks that method. Holding a constant angle relative to a close source produces a spiral path inward, which is why insects circle lights rather than flying straight at them.
Other factors compound it. Many insects are drawn to ultraviolet wavelengths specifically. Some may mistake bright light for open sky and orient toward it as an escape route.
The Second-Order Problem
This is the part that matters most for pest control.
Lights concentrate insects. Concentrated insects attract predators. Within a few nights of a light being installed, you generally find:
- Spiders building webs directly around the fixture, because it delivers food
- Scorpions on nearby walls and at ground level, hunting insects that fall
- Centipedes working the same area
- Geckos and other predators where present
So a porch light does not just bring moths. It reliably produces a spider population around the doorway and, in this region, can draw scorpions toward the foundation. Homeowners often treat the spiders repeatedly without ever connecting them to the fixture six feet away.
What Reduces It
Change the color temperature. The single most effective step. Insects respond strongly to short wavelengths, meaning ultraviolet, blue, and cool white. They respond far less to warm, longer wavelengths.
Switch exterior fixtures to warm white LEDs at 2700K or lower, or to amber and "bug light" bulbs. LEDs are already an improvement over older mercury vapor and fluorescent lighting because they emit little ultraviolet, but a cool white LED at 5000K still attracts substantially more than a warm one.
Move the light away from doors. If a fixture is needed for security or navigation, positioning it away from entryways and aiming it back toward the path keeps the insect concentration away from the doors they would otherwise walk through.
Reduce total lighting. Use motion sensors rather than dusk-to-dawn operation. An insect aggregation takes time to build, and a light that runs for two minutes when someone approaches never develops one.
Aim downward. Shielded, downward-directed fixtures light the ground without broadcasting in all directions. This also reduces light trespass and is generally better lighting design.
Close the gaps. Insects at a light still have to get in. Door sweeps, intact screens, and sealed penetrations turn an attractant into a nuisance rather than an infestation.
Consider indoor light escaping outward. Uncovered windows at night function as light sources too, and insects will accumulate on the glass and enter when a door opens.
What Does Not Work
Bug zappers. Well documented to kill overwhelmingly non-target and beneficial insects while having little effect on the ones people care about. They also attract more insects into the area than they eliminate.
Ultrasonic repellers. No credible evidence of effectiveness against insects.
Yellow bulbs that are still cool white. The color of the glass matters less than the actual emission spectrum. Look at the stated color temperature rather than the tint of the bulb.
Practical Priority
If you do one thing, change the bulbs at the doors you use most to warm white 2700K or amber. It costs very little, takes ten minutes, and reduces both the insects at the entry and the spiders that follow them.
