Voles & Gophers in northern Nevada
Two very different animals chew up northern Nevada yards. Pocket gophers live almost entirely underground, pushing up crescent-shaped mounds of loose soil as they dig, eating roots and bulbs from below, and chewing through drip and sprinkler lines. Voles stay near the surface, carving narrow runways through lawns and chewing the bark off shrubs and young trees, much of it under snow cover, which is why the damage shows up all at once when the snow melts. Homes backing onto open range, the Truckee corridor, or newly graded lots see the most of both.

Neither one comes indoors, but both do real damage outside. Gophers can wipe out a garden bed or a young tree in a season and chew through irrigation lines. Voles girdle shrubs and trees, and both breed fast enough that a few in spring can mean dozens by fall.
