Most of the Truckee Meadows has no mosquito problem worth the name, which is why the parts that do feel so unfair. Pressure here tracks water almost perfectly: the Truckee River corridor, the Sparks Marina, the ponds and constructed wetland through Damonte Ranch and Double Diamond, the low ground the North Valleys hold after a wet winter, and summer irrigation that never quite drains. Adults spend the day resting in shaded, humid cover, under decking, in dense shrubs, in tall grass, and come out to feed at dawn and dusk. In high-desert heat they go from egg to biting adult in a week or two, and it only takes about a tablespoon of standing water to do it.
