Termites in northern Nevada
The western subterranean termite (Reticulitermes hesperus) is established across the Truckee Meadows, though at far lower density than in California or the desert Southwest. It nests in soil rather than in the structure and reaches wood through shelter tubes, pencil-width mud tunnels running up foundation walls, piers, and crawl-space joists. Dry high-desert soil and cold winters keep numbers down, but the properties that do get hit share a short list of traits: wood in contact with soil, a crawl space that stays damp, irrigation running against the foundation, or a woodpile stacked on the ground by the house. Older stock in Midtown, the Old Southwest, and along the Truckee corridor is where we find it most.
